Camera Trap Image of the Week - 16

We often see lions ‘playing’ with porcupines Hystrix africaeaustralis at waterholes – they may surround the porcupine, but its quills prove effective in fending off any attacks. Sadly not all the time, it seems, since this lion has managed to expose the soft underbelly and killed the porcupine…

During the dry season our waterholes become very busy, with animals queuing to drink. Some species become rather impatient, and others don’t like being disturbed – this mountain zebra clearly did not want to give up her position at the water!

Another nice example of an ID-quality shot of a female lion. Here we can clearly see her whisker spot patterns, which allow us to be sure of her identity and hence which group we would expect to see her with. That’s the research centre in the background…

We often see caracal on our camera traps, but almost always at night and almost always just one individual. Here we have a rare shot of a pair of caracals pictured at one of our waterholes in the early morning.
